quick guide: makeup for glasses wearers

I have had contacts/glasses for years now, and usually fluctuate between the two depending in my level of laziness and makeup being worn. I recently got a new pair of glasses that I’m loving {subtle cateye frames-love!}, so I have almost exclusively worn them for a few months. In doing so I have had to figure out the best makeup looks to flatter and complement my frames. Here’s a quick guide with makeup tips for glasses wearers:

1. Don’t skip the mascara! It will add definition to your eyes. Just be patient, let it dry. Otherwise your frames will look scary. Oh, and everyone should be curling their lashes. It instantly opens up your eyes.

2. Save the bright colors for your lips. Bright eyeshadow looks are quickly lost behind the frames.

3. Also, save smokey shadow looks for when you wear your contacts. The frames can naturally cast shadows behind them, so dark looks may look way too vampy.

4. Wearing glasses may hold you back from glammed up eyeshadow looks, but it is such a great opportunity to let your complexion be the star. Even out your skin with foundation and add a rosy cheek with your favorite blush.

5. Define your brows. Brows frame the entire face, and even more so for glasses wearers since the glasses, which are attracting attention, sit right below the brows.

Happy Monday!

march ipsy

finally got my first ipsy glam bag last week after being on the waitlist for almost 3 months! Ipsy is a beauty subscription service that is $10/month. You receive 4-5 deluxe samples or full-size beauty products in a cute reusable cosmetic pouch each month. Bags are customized to your preferences based on a quiz you take, with products ranging from makeup to skincare. I have had other beauty subscriptions in the past, such as Birchbox and GlossyBox, so I decided to give ipsy a shot. Subscription boxes/bags are such an affordable way to try out new products!

Here’s what came this month:

MarchGlamBagOf the 4 products, 3 are full-size {the lipstick is a sample}.

From left to right:
Be a Bombshell Bora Bora Eyeshadow Quad– gorgeous, highly pigmented colors!
bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in Get Ready– I’m not a huge fan of lipsticks but this one does seem moisturizing and is a pretty color.
Pixi Beauty Flawless Beauty Primer– I was pretty hesitant at first because the color of the primer is really bronzy {and I am not} but it sheers out nicely and leaves a glowy finish.
Nicole by OPI in Roughles- I’m not a fan of getting nail polishes in my subscriptions because I’m just not into collecting all the colors. And I’m super disappointed in this one. The color is a sky blue/turquoise mint with a rough, pebble-like matte finish. I do not like weird nail finishes and usually stay in the pink and purple undertone range. So I’ll probably give this one to my mom- she doesn’t discriminate.

So there you have it! My first glam bag! I look forward to the bag each month and will do an “unbagging” with you.

homemade corn & black bean salsa

I love chips and salsa. Homemade salsa, preferably- that jar stuff just doesn’t match up. But there is so much prep work to homemade salsa {and I have no portion control with this combo} that I usually reserve it for restaurants or parties {such a party staple}.

But last week I found myself just 2 ingredients short of a great black bean and corn salsa that I knew I had to make it happen. So here it is!

{Don’t judge my inconsistent knife skills. This salsa has character.}

Corn & Black Bean Salsa*

1 can of whole corn kernels, drained and rinsed
1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed
2 tomatoes, diced
1/2 red onion, diced
3-4 cloves of garlic, minced finely
1 handful of cilantro, chopped
juice of 1 lime
salt & pepper to taste
*Proportions are relative. Do what feels right!

After prepping each ingredient, mix all and season to your taste. Let sit for 10-15 minutes for flavors to combine.
